At the beginning it was called Duque de Alburquerque, but soon received the name of Cervantes, considering it as a prolongation of the street with the same name.
As is clearly shown, takes its name from the illustrious D. Miguel de Cervantes, born in Alcalá de Henares, being baptized in the parish Santa María of that city, the day 9 of October of 1547.Son of Rodrigo Cervantes and doña Leonor de Cortinas. He studied Letters and Humanities in Madrid, in «Estudio de la Villa», where he received lessons from the master D. Juan López de Hoyos, who called him my beloved disciple.
In 1605 he published his immortal «Don Quijote de la Macha» while living in Valladolid. He lived in different houses in Madrid, the last one being in León street, on the corner with Francos, where he died on April 23, 1616.
