A bakery called «Horno de la Mata», gave the name to this street, which carried the surname of its founder, Juan Mateo de la Mata. He opened this bakery with the aim of providing bread for the residents since the time when were not enough to cover the needs of the entire population with the oven of Villanueva and Vallecas. This street was also remodeled on the occasion of the works of widening of Gran Via. In the number 11 there was a house that served as a meeting site for a republican centre, in which were held ardent debates with the most prominent speakers of the time.
